About the HDSA

Our Founding Members

  • "A shared vision of advocacy, acceptance, education and a better quality of life for our children was the motivation to officially form the Halton Down Syndrome Association in 1984. Since then the Association was grown and thrived thanks to all the dedicated parents. Much progress has been made over the last 40 years in our shared vision for our children. We indeed find this most gratifying. Keep up the good work as there is still work to be done."

    — Brian & Maureen Monaghan

  • "I have many memories of the early days of the Association. Although our events required lots of effort, everyone pitched in with their time. This was a great way to bond with other parents and kept the Association grounded and close to the needs of everyone. When I think of the many, many hours spent doing bingos that we all worked on as this was our major fundraising activity. (I think I did 60 one year). Also our first ever bike ride to raise money at Bronte Park.

    — Bill Scott

  • "Every detail was thoughtfully executed. We're thrilled with the outcome."

    —Former Customer

  • "As a Founding family we done our best to support HDSA for the past 40 years. Memorable moments include: The HDSA annual picnics at the Boycott resident Camping at Elora Gorge with other HDSA families The bestest HDSA garage sale held at St. Raphael's church."

    — Peggy, Malcolm and Katy Harris

Since 1984, we’ve supported individuals with Down syndrome and their families through every stage of life, with a focus on connection, advocacy, education, and practical support. Whether you’re new to a diagnosis, looking for community, or supporting someone you love, you’ll find a place here.

Behind every program, event, and resource at HDSA is a group of people who care deeply about this community.

Our volunteer Board leads with empathy, lived experience, and a shared belief that individuals with Down syndrome should have every opportunity to learn, grow, and shine. Together, we’re building a more inclusive Halton, one family, one connection, and one step forward at a time.

Over the last 40 years HDSA has grown from a small group of families into a strong, volunteer-powered network in Halton. We share, learn, and celebrate together so people with Down syndrome can reach their potential at every stage of life.
