What is Down Syndrome?

According to the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, Down syndrome is a “naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always existed and is universal across racial, gender, and social-economic lines.”

Some facts about Down syndrome

The genetics of Down syndrome

Usually people have 46 chromosomes. They receive 23 from their mother and 23 from their father.  People with Down syndrome have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. That is why Down syndrome is also called Trisomy 21 and World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st (3/21).
