Thank you, Bruce!

Bruce_180x180.jpgAt the AGM last Sunday, the torch was past from our President of 5 years, Bruce Whitehouse to our new President, Leanne Tovey. Bruce had these beautiful parting words to share:

I was reflecting the other day about how much different summer was than winter; and about how convenient it is to just walk out the door – no struggling with boots, coats, hats, gloves and all the extras that go with the cold and the snow. Wouldn’t life be so much simpler if it was always summer!

Then I started to think about how much we would miss if we didn’t have winter; skiing (for those who do ski), enjoying the sights and sounds of a fresh snowfall, hockey games, figure skating, magical evenings with the fireplace roaring, even the occasional time of shoveling the driveway.

And that brought me to thinking about our lives and the lives of our HDSA members. Life is often more like preparation for going out during winter. We wait while someone finds and gets their boots on, and their coat on, then their gloves and hat – and often we help them along the way. We don’t really begrudge the time but we sometimes do wonder what it would be like if we could streamline the preparation – and have it more like summer, much like other families seem to.

And then we realize that the wonder and gift of diversity is something that is much like winter preparation. It isn’t always easy, but it helps us appreciate the value of differences. And that very simple metaphor is a lesson about how the HDSA can serve its membership. We can’t change the fact that it is winter, but we can help make the winter
preparation a little less arduous.

Our Strategic Planning has identified the transition points where we can help our members prepare for winter – and the rest of the seasons. By focusing on these areas over the next few years, I believe we will establish the HDSA as a key resource to help our members, and other stakeholders in our communities, to be better equipped to navigate the challenges and the joys of living with Down syndrome. I hope that my contributions as your president have helped to prepare the HDSA for the future, for growth, and for helping our members to lead fulfilling lives and to contribute to society in a meaningful and inclusive manner.

For one final analogy: Ours is not a sprint but rather a co-operative journey - a relay race – in which we strive to make sure we succeed as a family. With that analogy, I am confident that I am passing the baton to the next team member who will help all of us advance; our members, our membership and our association. Thanks for letting me help and share in this journey.

And we thank you, Bruce, for keeping us going over all these years! Best wishes to you and your family!
