Improving the quality of life of individuals with Down syndrome.

Kim Pace Memorial Bench

PLEASE NOTE: The time of the dedication has changed to 11:30am instead of 1:00pm due to a scheduling conflict.

Kim Pace was an exceptional individual and wonderful friend to HDSA for over 20 years until her passing in 2011. A Speech Language Pathologist by profession, she was that and so much more to many in our community.

You are invited to gather at her newly installed memorial bench on  Saturday, June 13th at 11:30 am to share a few words, music, and memories.  The dedication of this bench was made possible by private donations and a generous contribution by HDSA. It is located at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington, facing the children's playground.

Please click here to read an article in Inside Halton about this amazing woman who left us too soon.

We hope you can join us to honour this special woman for who she was and what she contributed to our community.

Art Program at the Art Gallery of Burlington

The Elementary Group is excited to offer a series of FREE art classes to our children aged 4-14. There will be 4 two-hour sessions held; each session will start with a 30 minute tour of the building and current exhibitions, followed by 1.5hrs of hands-on activity.

Each session will have your child working with a different medium - clay, painting, and monoprinting. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

PLEASE NOTE: All skill levels are welcome! You and your child do not have to be artistically inclined to participate!

The sessions will be facilitated by Art Therapist Becky Hewis and an artist educator both contracted by the AGB.

The first two dates are scheduled for Saturday May 30th, and Saturday June 27th from 2-4pm. The remaining two sessions will be held in the fall, tentatively booked for September 19th and October 24th.

If you are interested in your child participating in this series, please RSVPto Laurie Mendoza ASAP. We are asking you to try to commit to all 4 sessions at this time, as is reasonably possible given the time frame.

When RSVP'ing, please indicate if you plan to participate with your child, if you require a volunteer to attend with your child, or if you feel your child would be independent enough to attend by themselves.

The AGB also requests a photography permission form be completed that will allow them to photograph the sessions for use when they request sponsorship for programs. Please fill this out and bring it with you to your child's first session on May 30th.

The AGB is located in southwest Burlington at 1333 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington, ON L7S 1A9.  It is directly across the street from the wonderful Spencer Smith Park. Please note: You will receive a complimentary parking pass for the AGB for use during your child's session.

Please RSVP to or contact Laurie Mendoza with any questions.

2014 Tax Tips

Feb 25, 2015

Once again, the Income Tax filing deadline is approaching. For the last 9 years, we have had the privilege of sharing Tax Tips information with people with disabilities and their families.  This year I am pleased to continue that tradition.

The attached Tax Tips 2014 article is designed to assist people with disabilities and their families in preparing their 2014 Income Tax Returns and in understanding the deductions and credits that may be available to them.

I believe that we should work together to share information that is vital to our community and as such, please feel free to share this email or the article to as many people as you wish.

All the best…Graeme

World Down Syndrome Day Elementary School Contest:

HDSA has launched the World Down Syndrome Day Contest for Elementary Schools within the Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board to spread awareness about Down syndrome within our younger generation.  The contest encourages schools to choose a day in March to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (as the 21st falls on a Saturday during March Break) and to then put together a digital media presentation highlighting their celebration.  We will then select three winners who will receive $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively to put toward technology or assistive technology for their schools.

Please inquire about the contest in your child's school to help encourage participation.  Visit for more information and printouts.

Please visit for information on how to bring this contest to your school, and for the chance to win up to $3000 to put towards technology!
